MAPUTO, Mozambique Church members here participated in a celebration Aug. 30, held at a local Maputo school for the disabled, to commemorate the donation of 500 wheelchairs by the Church and the Wheelchair Foundation.
President R. Perry Ficklin, first counselor of the South Africa Johannesburg Mission, spoke on behalf of the Church, explaining the mission of the humanitarian program. A group from the Association of the Disabled of Mozambique sang traditional songs in the local language of Shangana, followed by a "silent" theater performance by hearing-impaired students from the ADEMO School for the Disabled.
Eighteen missionaries greeted those in attendance and then helped more than 80 recipients into new wheelchairs.
Wheelchairs are being distributed in each of the 10 provinces of Mozambique this fall. The Church has more than 2,500 members in two districts and 13 branches in Mozambique.
