Ground was broken for the temple on a hill in a residential area north of the city on March 29, 2003. It is the fourth temple in Texas, joining operating temples in Dallas, Houston and Lubbock. President Gordon B. Hinckley announced on June 24, 2001, that a temple would be built in San Antonio, the third largest city in the state.
