"To describe my inner feelings I'd say I'm calm as a hurricane or even better I'm happy and frightened."
The call as an apostle came unexpectedly Friday.
"I have received a call and been given a sacred trust that will influence my life forever. I have a great sense of inadequacy. There has been a deep and painful examination of my soul during the many hours that have passed since Friday morning."
Latter-day Saints are a source of strength and inspiration.
"I want to thank every member of the church for your faithfulness, despite temptations, to the principles and doctrines of the Lord Jesus Christ. For you willingness to follow the living prophet . . . For your sacrifices in giving of your emotional, spiritual and temporal substance. Thank you for paying an honest tithing and not neglecting the poor and the lonely. I have seen the face of Christ in your lives . . . you are a modern miracle."
The calling of an apostle carries great responsibility and opportunity.
"My heart and mind is filled with joy that for the rest of my life will have the opportunity to talk of Christ, to preach of Christ, to rejoice in Christ and to prophesy of Christ. Realizing my weaknesses, I get great comfort from the instructions given by the Lord that the "fullness of my gospel may be proclaimed by the weak and the simple . . . "
"The atonement of Jesus Christ is real. It opens the door to eternal life."
