For the first time in more than 35 years, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir will be heard in concert in San Diego, Calif. The choir will perform Friday, Feb. 4, at the Cox Arena, its first appearance in a concert in San Diego since July 18, 1969, when it sang for the 200th anniversary of the founding of San Diego in a performance at San Diego Stadium.

The choir, accompanied by an ensemble from the Orchestra at Temple Square, will sing a broad selection of music, with much of the program drawn from the repertoire it will perform the next evening in Los Angeles for the American Choral Directors Association convention.

The San Diego concert is open to the public, and all are welcome. For more information on tickets and the concert location, please visit the Mormon Tabernacle Choir web site at mormontabernaclechoir.org or contact the Cox Arena ticket office at (619) 594-7315.

The choir's Los Angeles appearance for the American Choral Directors Association came as the result of a special invitation from the ACDA leadership to headline at its biennial convention. The association was founded as a means for choral directors at every level to have the opportunity to meet and promote musical excellence. The ACDA will host the national convention for many of its 18,000 members who represent more than 1 million singers nationwide. The convention will include roundtable discussions, seminars and performances by many specialty and scholastic choirs.

The Tabernacle Choir accepted the invitation to perform as the grand finale of the conference. "We are honored to have received this invitation," said Craig Jessop, musical director of the choir. "This truly is one of the pinnacles of choral performance."

The choir will perform three closed concerts in Los Angeles for the members of the ACDA. All three concerts will be on the night of Feb. 5 in order to accommodate the attendees of the convention. These concerts will not be open to the public. Two of the concerts will be held in the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the other will be in the new Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in Los Angeles.

Before leaving for California, the choir will offer a special ACDA premiere concert in Salt Lake City at the Conference Center on Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. The public is invited and tickets are not required. Conference Center doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The concert will last approximately 60 minutes. Seating is limited to those 8 years of age and older.
