In its latest release on compact disc, "Choose Something Like a Star," the Mormon Tabernacle Choir celebrates the work of American musical composer Randall Thomson, whom choir musical director Craig Jessop described as "one of America's greatest choral composers."
"This recording is offered as our gift to future generations so they may discover the mood, the feeling, the innocence and the joy of an earlier time of America's history," Brother Jessop wrote in notes included with the CD.
He characterized the composer's music as "noted for its beautiful harmonies, timeless sense of drama, and meticulous craftsmanship.
"Few American choral music students of the '60s, '70s, '80s or '90s have not sung his music," Brother Jessop noted.
Recorded in November, the CD opens with "The Last Words of David," and includes four choruses from "The Peaceable Kingdom," a setting for Isaiah's words. "Frostiana" sets to music seven poems of Robert Frost, including "The Road Not Taken" and "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening." Two "Allelujah" works close the assortment.
The album, is available at retail outlets for LDS products and inspirational music and at deseretbook.com and amazon.com.
