TAIPEI, Taiwan Government officials and representatives from eight news organizations were among more than 1,000 people who attended an open house for the Church's new service center here on Saturday, Jan. 15.
The center includes a chapel, classrooms and offices.
Elder John B. Dickson of the Seventy, Asia Area president, spoke briefly during the activities. He was followed by Commissioner C.T. Hsueh of Taipei City's Department of Social Welfare, who was complimentary of the new building and the Church in general, citing many of the Church's programs that benefit its members and the community as a whole.
The following Saturday, Jan. 22, Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou visited the newly constructed meetinghouse for the Taipei 4th Ward, Taipei Taiwan Central Stake. The meetinghouse occupies two floors of a 10-story building that was destroyed by an earthquake in 1999. The mayor visited to thank members of the Church for their efforts in rebuilding in such a short time. He said it was a great example to the entire city. He also mentioned all the good the Church does in the community.
