FONTANA, Calif. — In an area where the threat of strong earthquakes is ever present, the Fontana California Stake sponsored an emergency preparedness fair Saturday, Feb. 12.

The fair, open to all of the city's citizens, was organized to help them prepare themselves for major disasters, with an emphasis on earthquake preparedness.

Among the speakers at the stake center were San Bernardino County Fire Battalion Chief Al Krelnikov, Fontana Chief of Police Larry Clark and Janice Rutherford of the Fontana City Council. The city promoted the fair, held at the meetinghouse, which is designated as a community disaster relief site.

Each speaker provided instruction and resources on preparing for a natural disaster, how the City of Fontana will respond during a major emergency, and how citizens can coordinate with Fontana police to provide disaster relief.

Chief Krelnikov mentioned it is anticipated that 50 percent of area emergency response personnel would perish in an 8.0 earthquake. After hearing this, listeners resolved to upgrade their emergency food and water supply from a 3-day supply to a 7- to 14-day supply.

The Fair included many hands-on exhibits and demonstrations including an exhibit of a seven-day food and water kit, and a "Stop, Drop and Roll" demonstration for children, teaching them what to do if their clothes catch fire. Fire and police emergency response vehicles were on display outside the building.

The stake plans to work with local and county civic leaders to hold another emergency preparedness fair in 2006.
