BYU stayed in house to hire new athletic director Tom Holmoe who has been an associate athletic director since June of 2002 and is a former Cougar football player.

BYU President Cecil O. Samuelson announced the hiring of Brother Holmoe, 44, at a news conference on campus Tuesday, March 1.
Originally hired as associate athletics director for development, Brother Holmoe last September became co-chairman of the Transition Leadership Team overseeing the consolidation of men's and women's athletics. He had specific responsibility for football and gymnastics, supervision of the Cougar Club and the capital campaign for athletic facilities.
After playing defensive back for the Cougars from 1978-82, he continued his football career with the San Francisco 49ers for seven years, claiming three Super Bowl rings.
He began coaching as a graduate assistant at BYU in 1990-91, then rose through assistant coaching ranks at Stanford University and with the 49ers to become head coach at the University of California-Berkeley from 1997-2000.
At the beginning of the news conference, BYU Advancement Vice President K. Fred Skousen said the hiring of the new athletic director followed a nationwide search by a committee he chaired. He said there were many qualified candidates who applied for the position.
