A selection of Church motion pictures that in the past have been used in classroom and home instruction are now being released on DVD format, according to Robb Jones of the Church Curriculum Department.
New releases include a DVD with video presentations that heretofore have been contained on two VHS videocassettes being used in this year's Sunday School gospel doctrine course.
Three other DVD titles are being released in a series called the "Home and Family Collection." The title of the series reflects the fact that the DVDs are intended for use in the home as well as the classroom, Brother Jones said. The titles are available now at Church Distribution Center stores.
Here is a rundown of each of the DVDs.
"Doctrine and Covenants and Church History DVD Presentations" combines items from two existing video cassettes that have been used in the past with the Doctrine and Covenants and Church History gospel doctrine course in Sunday School for adults and older youth. In addition, there are two presentations that have been used by the Church Educational System but have not been available for presentation in Sunday School classes until now. The presentations on the DVD can be shown in English, French, Spanish, Japanese, German or Portuguese, a feature made possible by the high capacity of the DVD format.
"Home and Family Collection: To This End Was I Born" is the 27-minute, full-length version of "The Lamb of God" production depicting the last hours of the Savior's mortal life, His visit to the Spirit World and His resurrection. It can be shown in any of 17 languages.
"Home and Family Collection: Book of Mormon Stories" shows still pictures and text from the Book of Mormon Stories book published for beginning readers.
"Home and Family Collection: The Mountain of the Lord" was released on VHS in 1997 to coincide with the centennial of the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple. It tells of the history of the temple's construction. A bonus feature included with this DVD release is a collection of black-and-white still photographs from the period when the temple was being constructed.
Brother Jones said other DVD releases will come in the future in other collections as it is determined which of the Church's sizeable catalog of video productions to release in this format. He said Church meetinghouse libraries have been equipped with DVD players as of last year, and many Church members have players in their homes; thus the releases are another tool that may be used in teaching gospel truths.
