At a dinner honoring President Thomas S. Monson as the 2005 recipient of the Legacy of Life Award, Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve introduced Dr. Donald B. Doty, a thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon as the recipient of the 2005 Legacy of Life Scientific Award.
The award was presented earlier that day, April 14, at a symposium at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City.
Elder Nelson explained that the mission of the Deseret Foundation's Heart & Lung Research Foundation is to provide resources that may ultimately result in the saving of many lives.
"The foundation. . . has provided and continues to provide for all people a medical history-making legacy of life. As President Thomas S. Monson receives the prestigious Legacy of Life Award tonight, he exemplifies those who willingly give their lives in the service of God and their fellow human beings. Without such generosity, medical research could not yield the gains that we have come to know and enjoy in our own lifetime. To recognize those doctors and medical researchers who make these life-saving advances, the Deseret Foundation has also created the Legacy of Life Scientific Award."
He said that while this year's recipient of that award is very well known locally, he is even more widely acclaimed internationally. "He has authored the classical textbook used by cardiac surgeons throughout the world," Elder Nelson said. "They are deeply indebted to him for helping them understand how to do complex procedures precisely and well. He has taught surgery in more nations than most people will visit in a lifetime. Not only has he generously demonstrated his brilliant surgical techniques but he has diligently trained others to go and do likewise."
