ATHENS, Greece For a second year, the Greece Athens Mission sponsored a Celebration of Goodness where volunteers from throughout the Greek community were honored for their contributions. They were honored during an outdoor ceremony held June 25.
The celebration included two activities. The first was a cleanup of Mars Hill, Philipapou Park and Lycavattos Hill by 67 members and missionaries contributing 254 hours of labor in April.
The second activity honored nine residents for their volunteer service. Recipients included a foundation that gathered 4,500 Greek names for genealogical research, a missionary of the Catholic Church who served refugees for 10 years, a man who was afflicted with polio at age 7 but learned to make orthopedic equipment, a Greek Orthodox Priest who founded an orphanage and a well-respected lawyer who advocated freedom of religion in the courts.
The celebration was prompted by counsel from President Gordon B. Hinckley to "accentuate the positive." It was first held in 2003. When missionaries volunteered with the 2004 Olympics and learned firsthand the goodness in Greek society, they felt to renew the celebration this year.
