On June 12, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir received the 2005 Governors Award from the San Francisco Chapter of the Recording Academy, sponsor of the prestigious Grammy Awards.
Choir president Mac Christensen and director Craig Jessop received the award at San Francisco's Westin St. Francis Hotel.
The Governors Award honors "music legends whose creative talents and accomplishments have crossed all musical boundaries to be recognized as an asset to our music community." The award was presented by San Francisco Symphony Chorus Director Vance George, who is internationally recognized as one of America's finest choral directors.
Mr. George reminisced that when he was a young boy growing up in rural Indiana, his parents were finally able to persuade the electric company to run a wire to their home. Their first electronic acquisitions were a light bulb, an electric iron, and a Zenith radio. It was on this radio that Mr. George first listened to choral music—the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's weekly broadcast of "Music and the Spoken Word." The experience made such an impression as to influence his future career choices.
