Delegates to the United Nations representing 32 countries visited Salt Lake City July 13-14 to attend a dinner hosted by Elder Richard G. Scott of the Quorum of the Twelve and to visit Welfare Square and the Humanitarian Center.
The group of 84, including 22 who are repeat attendees, had been at BYU in Provo, Utah, July 11-13 for the annual World Family Policy Forum. The purpose of the forum, which was directed by Richard G. Wilkins of BYU's J. Reuben Clark Law School, was to educate and encourage attendees to support initiatives at the U.N. and in their own countries to strengthen family values and policies.
Elder Scott addressed the group the evening of July 13 in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City. He prefaced his remarks by saying he would like to speak "on things near and dear to my heart and important in this world today."
Continuing, he said, "I believe the tide is moving forward to allow the voice representing true family values to be heard."
Elder Scott said, "The continuity of a man and a woman in the covenant of marriage is what we know to be correct, and as God would have it.
"I believe the root cause of problems relating to the family is immorality. The blessing of procreation should only be carried out within the bonds of a marriage between a man and a woman, in a family setting. Satan entices the world to use such powers outside of marriage, in ways never intended by our Creator."
The following day, July 14, the group visited Welfare Square, the Humanitarian Center, Temple Square, the Conference Center and the Family History Library.
