Ground was broken Aug. 1, 1980, for the Martin Harris Memorial Amphitheater in Clarkston, Utah, designed to memorialize Martin Harris, David Whitmer and Oliver Cowdery, the Three Witnesses of the Book of Mormon plates, according to the Aug. 9, 1980, issue of Church News.
In comments during the ceremony, President Ezra Taft Benson of the Quorum of the Twelve expressed his gratitude for the project and said, "The sponsors will be rewarded. I'm certain this project pleases the Lord and I have a feeling the Three Witnesses are looking in on us today and that they, too, are pleased."
The memorial amphitheater was to be built south of the cemetery in Clarkston with the more than $60,000 in donated funds.
Then-Utah Gov. Scott Matheson, who portrayed Martin Harris in a Church production years earlier as a young boy, also participated in the service.
