Elder Richard G. Hinckley of the Seventy underwent surgery Aug. 9 to repair a ruptured eye, injured in an in-flight accident while traveling with President Gordon B. Hinckley in a private aircraft on a worldwide tour.

Jane Hinckley, Elder Hinckley's wife, said the surgery was a success and that doctors say her husband "will have some vision in that eye."

Now home recuperating, Elder Hinckley said he is "on the mend." He asked the Church News to express his appreciation for the prayers and concern from members on his behalf.

Elder Hinckley was injured while using a hand-held exercise device July 29, about 30 minutes after the flight left Anchorage, Alaska. The plane immediately returned to Anchorage where Elder Hinckley underwent surgery.

After remaining overnight in Anchorage, President Hinckley resumed his travels to Vladivostok, Russia, and then to Seoul, Korea, where he spoke to members in both locations on July 31. He also visited Taiwan, Hong Kong, India and Africa during the worldwide tour.

"I am sorry that we are late getting here," President Hinckley told nearly 10,000 Church members gathered in Seoul. "We were in Anchorage, Alaska, and had an accident which delayed us a day. It is a miracle, really, that we are here today."

Elder Hinckley spent two days recovering in Anchorage before returning to Salt Lake City where he underwent further surgery.
