The sun never sets on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Faithful church members are found around the globe. "It is the empire of Christ the Lord. It is the empire of the restored gospel. It is the kingdom of God."

Unlike the British Empire, which once made the same claim, this kingdom "has not come of conquest, of conflict or war. It has come of peaceful persuasion, of testimony, of teaching, one here and another there. . . . The growth of the church from its infancy to its present stature is phenomenal, and we have only scratched the surface."

Temple work in the church's 122 operating temples combined last year to total 32 million ordinances performed. "This is more than have been performed in any previous year." Six new temples are under construction, and another, yet to be announced, will add to the total, while others are being considered.

The church soon will make use of "complex computer technology" to avoid the duplications that occur as members throughout the world research genealogical lines, often overlapping. "Preliminary indications are that it will work, and if this is so, it will be a truly remarkable thing with worldwide implications." Technology also has made it possible for church leaders in Salt Lake City to conduct essential business in the far-flung stakes, although it is no longer possible for general authorities routinely to visit stake conferences.
