PRESTON, England — In response to a request from the First Presidency for stakes to commemorate the bicentennial of the birth of the Prophet Joseph Smith, the Preston England Stake produced a musical show, "A Marvelous Work."

Mayor and Mayoress Jan Virmani of Blackburn, England, and Elder Gerald N. Lund of the Seventy, area president, and his wife, Lynn S. Lund, were among special guests invited to attend the two-hour stage musical production celebrating the life of Joseph Smith. Some 1,200 members and friends enjoyed music, dance and dramatization presented in the Preston England Stake Center.

Under the musical and drama direction of Beth Trebilcock and Linda Beverley, 17 families of all ages and other cast members rehearsed for seven months to sympathetically recapture the journey from Palmyra to Carthage, showing Joseph as a young man, Joseph and Emma, the translating and printing of the Book of Mormon, the organization of the Church and the Relief Society, and many other scenes from the Prophet's life culminating in his martyrdom.

Stake President Malcolm G. Beverley expressed gratitude for an increase of love, understanding and testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith during this 200th anniversary year.

In an emotional finale, pictures of temples were projected on a wall while returned missionaries sang and marched to the stage waving flags of the countries where they had served, representing the spread of the gospel throughout the world.
