VANCOUVER, Wash. — Songs of praise and commemoration rang out in a high school auditorium here on Dec. 9 and 10 as the Portland Mormon Choir and Orchestra presented a Joseph Smith 200th birthday celebration. Twenty-two stakes were represented in the 150-voice choir and the 50-piece orchestra, from Longview, Wash., on the north to Eugene, Ore., on the south. The concert, which featured familiar hymns such as "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief," "Praise to the Man," and "The Spirit of God," as well as choral classics, sold out for both performances.

Harold Rust, choir president, remarked, "Many choir members have felt a special spirit throughout all the practices and performances — a confirmation that this event was really supposed to take place and that all the hard work was worth it."
