EDMONTON, Alberta The team roster of the provincial champions Raymond (Alberta) High School includes 38 members of the Church out of 40 players. The high school of 250 students in this town of 3,000 won the title in November over the Bev Facey Falcons of Edmonton in a 25-0 contest. This is the fourth time since 1997 that the Comets have won the provincial championship in football, according to correspondence from Mark Ellingson, a freelance writer and Church member.
Raymond was first settled by Mormon pioneers in 1901, wrote Brother Ellingson. "The town has eight strong wards of the Church, which make up the Raymond Alberta Stake. Over the last century, the town has sent out nearly 1,000 missionaries and has provided Church leadership for many parts of Canada and the United States."
Head Coach Lloyd Fairbanks, recently released bishop of the Raymond 3rd Ward, played football at Ricks College and BYU, as well as playing 17 years in pro-football in the Canadian Football League. The other coaches are also Church members.
