GUINSAUGON, Philippines The Church responded quickly with assistance for the village of Guinsaugon buried by a massive landslide Friday, Feb. 17, impacting at least three members. All missionaries were safe, according to Elder Richard J. Maynes of the Seventy, president of the Philippines Area.
Still missing is recent convert Joseph Misa's family, including two siblings believed to have been in an elementary school that was buried. He was away from home visiting his grandparents at the time of the disaster. Members Paul Sescon and Epie Capilan had their rice fields inundated in mud. They are members of the St. Bernard Branch, Maasin Philippines District. The meetinghouse of the branch of more than 100 members is about five miles from the landslide location.
Among the assistance from the Church was used clothing, relief bags containing enough to feed a family of five for three days, and hygiene kits. Twenty full-time missionaries from the Philippines Tacloban Mission joined the relief effort.
