At an annual banquet held Feb. 24, seven dedicated family history researchers were honored by BYU's Center for Family History and Genealogy.
The awards included the Distinguished Genealogical Service Award for 2005 and 2006, said George Ryskamp, director.
The late Norman E. Wright received the award for 2005, which was presented to his widow, Daniele Wright, and son Joel. The 2006 award was given to David E. Gardner. Both were chosen for their lifetimes of service and dedication to family history.
The Young Family Historian Award for 2005 was given to Geoff Rasmussen, and the 2006 award was given to Emily Wilbur. Both are promising researchers.
In addition, three lifetime genealogists were recognized for their continued efforts in the field.
Donna S. Packer, wife of President Boyd K. Packer, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve, was recognized for her longtime interest in family research. She continues to attend demanding, upper division research courses and apply her learning in research to identify ancestors and place them in the context of their times, said Brother Ryskamp.
David H. Pratt, a retired BYU history professor, is a volunteer at the center who gives expert research help and counseling.
June Bagnell is a devoted enthusiast who eventually moved to Utah to continue her research and to volunteer service. In the process, she investigated and joined the Church and has given years of volunteer service.
