The atoning sacrifice of the Savior saves mankind both from mortal death and the spiritual death that occurs when men are separated from God.
Book of Mormon prophet Alma referred to the Atonement as "the great plan of happiness," a phrase that describes a beautiful doctrine of the LDS faith.
Five truths associated with that doctrine include: 1. Knowledge that there is a God and he has a son, Jesus Christ. They are perfect, live in heaven and possess glorified bodies of spirit, flesh and bones. 2. Men were placed on earth to gain a body and have the opportunity to prove themselves by obedience to God's laws. 3. Through the infinite Atonement, God has provided a means to overcome sin and become clean again by repenting, qualifying men to regain his presence.
4. The fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden brought about both physical death and a spiritual separation from deity, conditions that are offset by the Atonement. 5. Jesus was born of an earthly mother, Mary, and inherited from her mortality and physical death. From God, his father, he inherited the power to overcome physical death, though he chose to submit to the Father's will and redeem mankind.
