KANSAS CITY, Mo. The second-ranked BYU-Hawaii women's tennis team defeated top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State on May 13 to win their sixth NCAA II National Championship in the last eight years. The Seasiders avenged their loss to the Pirates in last year's title match and put an end to AASU's 60-match winning streak. With the 5-3 victory, BYU-Hawaii ends the season with an unblemished record of 27-0.
Armstrong Atlantic State, located in Savannah, Ga., scored the first point of the match with an 8-4 win in the first doubles, but after the three doubles matches, BYU-Hawaiii held a 2-1 lead.
The defending champion Pirates took a 3-2 lead after the completion of the first two singles matches, getting wins at the top two positions. The Seasiders answered with a 6-2, 6-2 win from Teller at number five singles to knot the match at 3-3. Bula put the Seasiders up 4-3 by closing out a second-set tiebreaker for a 6-1, 7-6(5) win. Ramona Husaru then clinched the title for BYU-Hawaii with a 6-1, 7-5 victory in the third singles match.
