PAPEETE, Tahiti The newly remodeled Papeete Tahiti Temple the Church's 25th operating temple worldwide and one of four in the Pacific Islands opened to the public Oct. 14. The public open house will continue, excluding Sundays, through Nov. 4.
"We are so grateful that the members of the Church in Tahiti are once more able to enter the house of the Lord and participate in the sacred ceremonies that take place there," said Elder Spencer J. Condie of the Seventy and president of the New Zealand/Pacific Islands Area of the Church. "The temple will help to cement their faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ and encourage our members to continue making a positive contribution to their communities throughout French Polynesia."
Following the open house, the temple will be formally rededicated on Sunday, Nov. 12, in two sessions.
The Papeete Tahiti Temple was originally dedicated in 1983. Located a short distance from the center of Papeete, the rededicated temple will serve approximately 21,000 Latter-day Saints in French Polynesia. The 12,000-square-foot building is 2,000-square feet larger than the original temple.
The Church has had a presence in Tahiti for 162 years. Latter-day Saint missionaries first arrived in Tahiti in 1843.
