NEWCASTLE, Australia — Members of the Newcastle Australia Stake recently organized the first LDS soccer team to compete in the Northern NSW Christian Churches Soccer Football Association. In August, the team known as 'Latter Day Warriors' won the 2006 season grand-final.

The team had never played together until the first game of the season, which they lost. Learning from this and under the direction of team captain Peter Watts, the team unified to finish the season as minor premiers with a 16-game winning streak and seven points clear of their rivals on the competition ladder.

Grant Hamilton, club president, said, "The stake has a number of soccer players who wanted to play in a weekend competition, but unfortunately most involved Sunday games and they were unable to play a sport they loved. The Christian Churches Association only plays their games on Saturdays, so it was the perfect opportunity for players to form an LDS team."
