The Jordan River Utah Temple was dedicated on Nov. 16, 1981, the Nov. 21, 1981, Church News reported.
The article stated: "In the first of 15 sessions, President Marion G. Romney, second counselor in the First Presidency, read the dedicatory prayer, acting under the direction of President Spencer W. Kimball.
"President Kimball attended the session, the first time he has appeared in public since he underwent surgery Sept. 5 to remove scar tissue from under his skull.
"However, he did not address the 5,000 ticket-holding members assembled in various rooms of the temple and the additional thousands in the Tabernacle on Temple Square, where the proceedings were received by closed-circuit television."
There were three sessions each day from Nov. 16 to Nov. 20 with a total of 163,000 Church members over age 8 attending.
According to the article: "The Jordan River Temple, the 20th operating temple in the Church, is the first ever to be built in a valley where another temple is already located."
It is approximately 18 miles south of the Salt Lake Temple.
