It was big news in 1981 when the improving BYU football program resulted in its second straight win at the Holiday Bowl, defeating Washington State University 38-36.
In attendance at the game, President Gordon B. Hinckley, then of the First Presidency, recalled the BYU-SMU bowl match-up of the previous year, when BYU scored three touchdowns in the final four minutes to nip SMU 46-45, and said, "That game brought attention to BYU and the Church in a way few things could. The name of Brigham Young University was on everyone's lips."
