FREIBERG, Germany — For a group of members living in the central European countries of Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova, plans began months ago to attend the Freiberg Germany Temple.

Members from the three central European countries of Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova traveled for up to 96 hours to attend the Freiberg Germany Temple. Such trips are rare experiences for many members living in distant areas.

Arriving the last week in October for five days of performing temple ordinances, this group of 59 members traveled by bus for up to 96 hours from countries bordering the Black Sea.

As the bus rounded the bend in Freiberg and drove along a tree-lined street toward the temple, "They were awestruck at the simple beauty of this gracious edifice," said Elder Hans Hubert, who serves with his wife, Colleen, as a temple missionary.

More than half were first-generation members. Of the total, 36 received their own endowments. All came with ancestral records to perform ordinances for their families.

Traveling such distances at such a cost is often prohibitive, noted Elder Hubert. They did not know when they could return to the temple. "They had a burning desire and urgency to do all the work they could for their loved ones while they were here," he said.

Each session was filled to capacity with extra sessions added to accommodate the demand. By week's end, 4,105 ordinances had been completed.

Members from these once-communist countries returned home with, "their spirits elevated, testimonies strengthened (and) grateful for the tender mercies of the Lord," said Elder Hubert.
