MESA, Ariz. — Some 1,200 young single adults gathered at the Mesa Arizona Temple on New Year's Eve in a manner appropriate for the Sabbath. With permission of the temple presidency, the Christmas lights on the temple grounds were turned back on at 10:30 p.m. especially for the young single adults.

At 11 p.m., they all walked to the meetinghouse adjacent to the temple for a fireside of music and a talk delivered by Ray Kartchner, a counselor in the Arizona Tempe Mission presidency. Those who attended filled the chapel, cultural hall, the Relief Society and Primary rooms as well as the foyers to listen to Brother Kartchner's message.

At midnight, instead of the usual countdown and cheering associated with New Year's celebrations, the New Year was greeted with a prayer of humility and thanksgiving. Next, a breakfast of pancakes, eggs, bacon, milk and orange juice was served and the eating and socializing continued until 2 a.m.
