ORANGE, Calif. As part of their efforts to be prepared in an emergency, 56 members from the Orange California Stake earned licenses to be amateur (ham) radio operators on Feb. 7.
Orange California Stake President Matthew Goodman, noting the rigorous study required to prepare for an FCC licensing exam, said, "We brought in some Church members from the Pasadena area who voluntarily conducted a 'crash-course' on how to prepare for the exam."
Mike O'Neil and Ray Bence have put on the 12-hour, Friday evening and Saturday class for more than 400 students who are now amateur radio operators. Brother O'Neil clarified their motivation for teaching this course. "In a serious, widespread emergency, telephone and cell phone service may be temporarily interrupted or altogether unavailable, thereby leaving amateur radio frequencies as the best way to coordinate relief efforts," he said.
