Therefore, there is a time appointed unto men that they shall rise from the dead; and there is a space between the time of death and the resurrection. And now, concerning this space of time, what becometh of the souls of men is the thing which I have inquired diligently of the Lord to know; and this is the thing of which I do know.
And when the time cometh when all shall rise, then shall they know that God knoweth all the times which are appointed unto man.
Now, concerning the state of the soul between death and the resurrection Behold, it has been made known unto me by an angel, that the spirits of all men, as soon as they are departed from this mortal body, yea, the spirits of all men, whether they be good or evil, are taken home to that God who gave them life. Alma 40:9-11
When I was young, I was very afraid of death. I was afraid of losing loved ones, whether they would be friends or family. As I saw some who I knew and loved pass away, I sought comfort in all the wrong places. However, many years later, while reading in the Book of Mormon, I came across Alma 40:9-11, which was truly the comfort I had been seeking. I was absolutely satisfied to know that all those who have passed away have been taken home to our God, "whether they be good or evil." I realized that they were in good hands, having the opportunity to be taught, as well as teach the gospel to those who may not have received it in their mortal lives.
I don't fully understand the next life, but I believe that at the moment we are taken to see God, many who may not have known Christ, or accepted Him in this life, will know that He is truly the Savior and Redeemer of all mankind.
When we step back and look at our Heavenly Father's plan for us as an infinite plan, rather than a finite plan, as much of the world does, we can see how fair, just and perfect it is. The steps have been laid out for us, and our loving Heavenly Father has given us every opportunity to return to Him. Jesus Christ has paid the price for our sins, and through our faith we claim the mercy extended through His atonement, so that the demands of justice won't condemn us to an eternity of misery.
How thankful I am for modern revelation, for the efforts of Joseph Smith, and for a living prophet who continues to shower the world with undeniable truths. Elder Tyson Randall, California Carlsbad Mission
