President David O. McKay offered counsel on proper relationships during ceremonies for 62 graduates from the institute adjacent to the University of Utah on Sunday, May 26, 1957, according to the June 1, 1957, Church News.

According to the report, President McKay said that while the youth of that time were as good or better than those of previous years, they "lack a little in showing it."

It stated: "President McKay expressed concern over young men who take girls from their homes in the evening for pleasure, sometimes lacking the sense that they are their protectors."

Quoting President McKay, it said: "Keep in mind that the father and mother of the girl trust the girl's honor, virtue and life to you."

The article continued: "He said young people should select mates not entirely for sense of beauty nor one to manage household affairs only, but one who will understand you and be a mirror in which you receive recognition of yourself. The choice of a proper companion, a help-mate, may well determine the success or failure of life, he said."
