The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square will perform "Echoes from the Tabernacle" on Friday, July 21, in the Conference Center. The performance, which is this year's concert commemorating the arrival of the Mormon Pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley in 1847, is part of the Concert Series Gala celebrating the reopening of the Tabernacle following its recent extensive remodeling and seismic upgrade.
Asked why the choir and orchestra would celebrate the Tabernacle with a concert in the 21,000-seat Conference Center, music director Craig Jessop replied, "We have had an enormously successful Concert Series Gala reintroducing audiences to the renovated Tabernacle. We wanted to be able to accommodate our large summer crowds in one big Conference Center concert but still focus on the blessing the Tabernacle has been to the Church, the community and, really, the world as the originating location for our Music and the Spoken Word broadcast."
At the time of the July 21 concert, the choir and orchestra will have just recently returned from their 2007 concert tour of Canada, New York, Illinois, Ohio and Tennessee.
"We'll be sharing the music from our summer tour with audiences at home and across the county," said Brother Jessop, noting that the concert will be broadcast to stake centers in the U.S. and Canada.
Part of the commemoration program will be a video presentation on the history of the Tabernacle focusing on the role that it has played in sending both spoken word and music out to the world from Salt Lake City.
Tickets for the concert are being distributed free of charge to the public on www.lds.org/events and by phone at 801-570-0080. Seating is limited to children 8 years of age and older.
Standby seating will be available with the line forming at the north gate of Temple Square at 6 p.m. the evening of the performance.
