VERNAL, Utah Along with service projects, Scouting activities and good food, young men of the Vernal Utah Maeser Stake were challenged and encouraged by "Nephite prophets" during a three-day Aaronic Priesthood encampment June 28-30, similar to youth conferences around the Church.
Stake members portraying Nephi, Jacob, Mormon and other Book of Mormon prophets, as well as Joseph Smith and the Angel Moroni, provided a spiritual experience during evening campfires for nearly 170 young men, according to President Codi White, second counselor in the stake presidency. The event was at Bassett Springs, about 20 miles north of Vernal.
Those portraying Nephite prophets and warriors came out of the nearby woods, President White said, their way lighted by torches. The concluding invitation from the Prophet Joseph and the Nephites was for every young man to be a man of God and be as Helaman's stripling warriors.
Ward units were organized as the bands of Nephi, Jacob, Mormon, Alma, Helaman, Teancum and Moroni. Each created a Title of Liberty to represent his group. At the conclusion of the encampment, each young man was invited to sign a leather token and attach it to his ward's Title of Liberty, confirming a commitment to honor priesthood responsibilities. The banners will be placed in the bishops' offices as a visual reminder to the Aaronic Priesthood members of their commitments, President White said.
