Twice in three days, President Gordon B. Hinckley, then a counselor in the First Presidency, broke ground for the second and third temples in Asia, according to the Sept. 4, 1982, Church News.
Accompanied by Elder Marion D. Hanks of the Seventy and administrator of the Southeast Asia-Philippines Area, President Hinckley presided over the groundbreaking of the Manila Philippines Temple on Aug. 25, and the Taipei Taiwan Temple on Aug. 27.
The article stated: "The events ... fulfilled dreams of President Gordon B. Hinckley of the First Presidency and Elder Marion D. Hanks of the First Quorum of the Seventy, both with years of association with the Church in the Orient."
As a General Authority, President Hinckley had earlier supervised the Philippines area.
Both temples were dedicated by President Hinckley in 1984.
