There is a difference between thank you and gratitude, said President David O. McKay on Sept. 6, 1957, two days prior to his 84th birthday.
"Thank you" is of the lips and voice. "Gratitude" is from the heart.
"With gratitude I accept your tribute," said President McKay, speaking to "office employees who presented him with a handsome pair of shoes as a birthday gift," stated an article published Sept. 14, 1957, in the Church News.
"We sincerely hope that these shoes will be acceptable to you and will give you the desire to always put your best foot forward," said President Franklin J. Murdock of the Highland Stake, and Church travel director.
"We know these shoes will cover the feet that have walked the paths of righteousness and have brought comfort, consolation and inspiration to millions of people."
President McKay responded, "The affection with which I receive this gift will last throughout eternity. God bless you."
The office birthday party had become an annual event, with secretaries and other office employees on the first floor of the administration building gathering in the president's office to sing and enjoy refreshments.
