"'It is so tremendously important that the women of the Church stand strong and immovable for that which is correct and proper under the plan of the Lord,"' Relief Society General President Julie B. Beck said, quoting President Gordon B. Hinckley, as she addressed the General Relief Society Meeting Sept. 29.
The quote by President Hinckley was given in a Worldwide Leadership Training Meeting. Sister Beck said, "I have pondered and studied this inspiring charge and I have sought answers regarding how the women of this Church could fulfill President Hinckley's challenge and promise."
She then named three important areas in which women must excel:
• "Stand strong and immovable in faith." Sister Beck said women should excel in living and sharing their testimonies and do this by making and keeping covenants, being worthy and worship in His temples, studying His doctrine, qualifying for and following the Holy Ghost, sharing and defending the gospel, participating in personal and family prayer, having family home evening, and living the principles of self-reliance and provident living.
• "Stand strong and immovable in family." Sister Beck declared: "As a disciple of Jesus Christ, the responsibility for upholding, nurturing and protecting families is given to every woman in this Church. Women have distinct assignments given them from before the foundation of the world, and as a covenant-keeping Latter-day Saint woman, raising your voice in defense of the doctrine of the family is critical to the strength of families the world over."
• "Stand strong and immovable in relief." Offering relief, she continued, "has been our special province from the beginning."
In closing remarks, Sister Beck addressed "you great Relief Society presidencies." In encouraging them in helping the women of the Church build self-reliant families, she said, "You have the privilege to counsel in unity with priesthood leaders to plan a defense and refuge against those storms and tailor a relief effort for the specific needs of your people."
