As prophets have advised historically, Saints must take care not to the quench the spirit in their lives.

"The beckoning invitations of the world attempt to divert our attention from the straight and narrow path. The adversary labors to dull our sensitivity to the promptings of the spirit, whether we are a teenager, young adult or mature man or woman. The role of the spirit, the Holy Ghost, is essential in every season of our mortal lives."

The Holy Ghost is the guide Heavenly Father has provided for those who travel the "journey to exaltation." The path is "not on a plateau. Rather, it is an incline, ever onward and upward." The guidance of the Holy Ghost is essential. However, "when it comes to drawing upon the promptings and the blessings which flow from the Holy Ghost, we often live far below our privileges."

When invited, the Holy Ghost "quickens us" or "enlightens and enlivens the inner man or woman. ... We feel strengthened, filled with peace and joy."

A desire to cultivate the companionship of the Holy Ghost is enhanced by scripture study, prayer, fasting, renewing covenants and attending the temple. "We dare not quench the spirit through disobedience or neglect."
