Faith is exercised when members believe the Lord's teachings and claim His "exceeding great and precious promises" and become "partakers of the divine nature" (1 Peter 2:4).
That was the message shared by Elder Spencer J. Condie of the Seventy in his Saturday morning address.
"The Lord makes generous promises and He certifies that He will not vary from these promises," Elder Condie declared.
The Lord's countless exceeding great and precious promises include forgiveness of sin for the repentant. He has also promised to open heaven's windows to the faithful tithe payer and provide "great treasures of knowledge" to observers of the Word of Wisdom. Additional promises await those who observe the Sabbath and "feast upon the words of Christ" through scripture study.
"We are also promised that the Holy Ghost will be our constant companion when we 'let virtue garnish (our) thoughts unceasingly' (Doctrine and Covenants 121:45-46)," Elder Condie said. Fasting and faithful temple service also precede special divine promises.
Elder Condie warned that some, in their earthly impatience, might lose sight of the Lord's precious promises and disconnect their obedience from the fulfillment of such promises. "Important components of faith are patience, long-suffering and enduring to the end."
In an age of one-hour dry cleaning and one-minute fast food franchises, "it may, at times, seem to us as though a loving Heavenly Father has misplaced our precious promises or He has put them on hold, or filed them under the wrong name," Elder Condie said.
However, the biblical accounts of Abraham, Sara, Issac, Rebekah, Jacob and Rachel all demonstrate how those who exercise faith and patience will receive the Lord's promised blessings.
