75 years ago
On Nov. 22, 1932, President Heber J. Grant spent his 76th birthday at the home of his daughter, Grace Evans, in Pasadena, Calif. He was recuperating from undergoing major surgery in Chicago six weeks earlier.
An article in the Nov. 19, 1932, Church News stated: "Despite the illness through which he has successfully passed in the past few months, President Grant bears his age exceptionally well, and during the few days which he spent in Salt Lake between his return from Chicago and his visit to California, he appeared in excellent health."
The article said he had been a General Authority for a few weeks more than 50 years, "and on Wednesday, Nov. 23, the day following his birthday, he will have completed his fourteenth year at the helm of the Church as its president, thus providing his many friends and followers with another opportunity to voice messages of loving appreciation, confidence and good will."
The article continued: "With a personality commanding of admiration and attention, distinguishing him in all walks of life, President Grant is beloved and respected by his Church and by thousands of other friends gained during his long years of service which has carried him into most countries of the world."
"Just as surely and steadily as has been his rise in the Church has he advanced in leadership in the business and social life of this intermountain country," the article stated of President Grant.
