After 22 years as a General Authority, the last 19 as a counselor in the First Presidency, President Nathan Eldon Tanner died on Nov. 27, 1982, at age 84.

President Gordon B. Hinckley, a third counselor to President Spencer W. Kimball, conducted President Tanner's funeral in the Salt Lake Tabernacle on Nov. 30, and was the rite's concluding speaker, according to the Dec. 4, 1982, Church News.

Two days after the funeral, the First Presidency was reorganized. President Marion G. Romney, who had been serving as second counselor to President Kimball, was named first counselor and President Hinckley was named second counselor.

President Tanner was born in Salt Lake City, but raised in Alberta, Canada.

The Church News reported that shortly after he was called as president of the Calgary Stake, he was appointed president of Trans-Canada Pipeline Ltd. with headquarters in Toronto. Because of his Church calling, President Tanner refused to move, so the company established headquarters in Calgary.

After serving as an Assistant to the Twelve since 1960, he was called to the Quorum of the Twelve in October 1962. He was sustained as second counselor to President David O. McKay on Oct. 4, 1963. He also served as second counselor to President Joseph Fielding Smith and first counselor to President Harold B. Lee.
