Elder Eugene Fontanos, 23, serving in the Bacolod Philippines Mission, was struck and killed by a passing motorist while walking in the village of Valladolid along the Bagumbayan Highway on Feb. 26.
He was walking with his companion, Elder Jared M. Smith from the Knoll Park Ward, Salem Utah West Stake, and the ward mission leader, Rolando Terante, when the driver of a vehicle veered from the road.
Elder Fontanos was declared dead on arrival at the Valladolid District Hospital due to severe head injuries. His companions were also struck and received minor injuries.
They were walking near a meetinghouse in Purok Pigeon on their way to a teaching appointment.
Elder Fontanos, from San Fernando, LaUnion, Philippines, had been serving about 18 months. He was serving as district leader at the time of the accident and had been called to serve as zone leader at the next transfer.
Elder Fontanos was born Dec. 13, 1984, one of five children of Camilo and Sofia Fontanos. Because of desperate circumstances, he was raised by an uncle who introduced him to the Church and supported him during his mission.
In recent months, his mother and two sisters were baptized.
Elder Fontanos graduated in computer engineering. He was well loved by his companions and was known for his jovial personality. Shaun D. Stahle
