Pleased as a young boy with the 20 silver dollars he received from the sale of a calf he raised, Elder Sheldon F. Child of the Seventy said he reluctantly put two aside for tithing.
Speaking during the Sunday morning session of conference, he spoke of that Sunday in his boyhood and said that after he had given the two dollars to the bishop, he felt good for being obedient to the Lord.
"After Sunday School," he continued, "my mother was waiting for me by the bishop's office. I think she wanted to make sure I had actually paid my tithing. On the way home she told me how proud she was of me. Then she said, 'Your grandfather always told us children that if we would faithfully pay an honest tithing, the Lord would bless us and it would be the best investment that we could ever make."'
Repeating the Lord's promise to pour out blessings upon those who pay their tithes and offerings (see Malachi 3:10), Elder Child declared, "When we keep the law of the tithe, the Lord's promise is sure: blessings will come to us both temporally and spiritually, according to the wisdom and timing of the Lord."
Even in challenging economic times, he said, "if we first pay our obligation to the Lord and then use wisdom and good judgment, the Lord will help us manage the resources He has given us."
He talked of a mother in West Africa who counted out her tithing every day from the money she earned in the marketplace, then gave it to her bishop each Sunday. Her business grew and her family had enough food to eat.
He said she told him with tears in her eyes, "But the greatest blessings of all are that my children love the Lord and we are a forever family."
Then Elder Child stated, "This humble mother understood that one of the great blessings of being a full-tithe payer is the privilege of entering the House of the Lord and participating in the sacred ordinances that enable families to be together forever."
