The Church News is interested in compiling a list of all LDS athletes who are members of their nations' teams for the 2008 Summer Olympics to be staged in Beijing, China, Sept. 6-17.
The names of athletes who qualify for the Olympics can be submitted to the Church News at P.O. Box 1257, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84110, or by e-mail: Churchnews@desnews.com. Please include the names of the athlete's ward or branch, and stake or district.
According to the Deseret News 2005 Church Almanac, 17 LDS athletes participated in the 2004 Summer Games in Athens, Greece. They won a total of six medals three gold, two silver and one bronze.
The earliest LDS athlete in the Summer Games, according to the almanac, was Alma Richards as a member of the United States Olympic team who won a gold medal in the high jump at Stockholm, Sweden, in 1912.
