BRASILIA, BRAZIL
President Thomas S. Monson and Elder Russell M. Nelson made a courtesy call on Brazil's Vice President Jose Alencar while they were in Brazil's capital on June 2.
In the country for the dedication of the Curitiba Brazil Temple on Sunday, June 1, President Monson and Elder Nelson traveled to Brasilia on Monday, where that evening they addressed a meeting attended by more than 7,000 members of the Church.
President Monson and Elder Nelson were accompanied by Elder Charles Didier of the Seventy and president of the Brazil Area, and Elder Ulisses Soares, a counselor in the area presidency.
President Monson and Elder Nelson and the vice president talked about common interests, particularly the family. The Church leaders presented to Mr. Alencar a figurine depicting a family and a framed copy of "The Family: a Proclamation to the World."
The also gave him a paper published about temples, which highlighted the Curitiba Brazil Temple. Mr. Alencar took several moments to look over the paper.
As the visit concluded, Mr. Alencar asked President Monson to offer a prayer. He did so, asking that the Lord's blessings would be with the people of Brazil, their homes and their families. He also asked that a blessing be upon Mr. Alencar so that he could continue to serve his people.
"There wasn't a dry eye in the room," Elder Nelson said.
President Monson said of Mr. Alencar: "There was a genuineness about him. He was very gracious, and generous with his time. It was a very pleasant visit."
The visit lasted about 40 minutes.
Other Church members present during the visit were Elder Ronaldo da Costa, Area Seventy, and Moroni Torgan, former congressman for the state of Ceara, Brazil.
