Royalty were among those to visit the Nuku'alofa Tonga Temple on the first day of its open house, according to the July 24, 1983, Church News.
The article stated: "Heavy winds and an extensive cloud cover hinting rain threatened to dampen a special open house of the Nuku'alofa Tonga Temple July 9, at which the king and queen of Tonga were honored guests.
Elder John H. Groberg of the Seventy also attended to "personally conduct the king, Taufa'ahau Tupuo IV, and the queen through the temple as their majesties had requested," according to the article.
It continued: "The king and queen, as they arrived, rode the last half mile through streets lined with LDS children dressed in green and white school uniforms. The youngsters waved and chanted the traditional Tongan greeting of respect to their king and queen, 'Tue-Tue-Tue."'
The king "thanked the Church for building the beautiful structure and expressed satisfaction with all he had seen and heard," the article added.
