An American visiting Seoul, South Korea, became hopelessly lost in the maze of that city's underground streets. Unlike many streets above the surface, those in "underground Seoul" had few signs in English, and the similarity of shops made it difficult to identify any particular street corner.
None of the people the visitor asked for directions spoke English. After a while, the American met up with an Australian, who happened to be trying to find his way back to the same hotel. Together, they roamed the maze. Eventually, a Korean gentleman answered in English their inquiry for directions. He explained that they had wandered very far from their hotel and that it would be difficult for them to find their way back on their own. He offered to show them the way.
"Follow me," he said, and then took off at a quick pace.
It was difficult for the two visitors to keep up with their guide. From time to time, the Korean paused, looked over his shoulder and urged them onward. Literally strangers in a strange land, the visitors were grateful that someone who knew the way was willing to lead them. They were careful to not lose sight of him among the crowds of people. Upon arriving at the entrance to the hotel, the foreigners thanked their guide, saying that he had rescued them from being lost, if not forever, at least for a very long time. The guide brushed aside their expressions of gratitude, saying that he was pleased to have been of help. He wished them a safe journey for the remainder of their visit and then, with a bright smile, said, "Watch where you go. Be careful, do not become lost again."
How fortunate were the visitors to have found someone who could step forward and say, "Follow me."
We are much like the two strangers who wandered, lost beneath the city of Seoul. We are wandering souls far from our real home where our Heavenly Father waits for our return. From time to time, we need someone who can help us find our way, lead us from wayward paths and deliver us safely to our desired destination.
Many people can help us: General and local Church leaders, parents, teachers, friends and even good-hearted strangers are among them. However, the greatest Guide is our Savior and Redeemer. Many times during His mortal ministry, He extended the invitation, "Follow me."
In the First Presidency Message published in the September 1994 Ensign, President Howard W. Hunter wrote that Jesus Christ issued a call that was at once an invitation and a challenge: "To Peter and his brother Andrew, Christ said, 'Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men' (Matthew 4:19). To the rich young man who asked what he must do to have eternal life, Jesus answered, 'Go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor,...and come and follow me' (Matthew 19:21). And to each of us Jesus says, If any man serve me, let him follow me' (John 12:26).
"The Lord's invitation to follow Him is individual and personal, and it is compelling. We cannot stand forever between two opinions....
"Christ's supreme sacrifice can find full fruition in our lives only as we accept the invitation to follow Him. This call is not irrelevant, unrealistic, or impossible. To follow an individual means to watch him or listen to him closely; to accept his authority, to take him as a leader, and to obey him; to support and advocate his ideas; and to take him as a model. Each of us can accept this challenge. Peter said, 'Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps' (1 Peter 2:21). Just as teachings that do not conform to Christ's doctrine are false, so a life that does not conform to Christ's example is misdirected, and may not achieve its high potential destiny."
May we follow Jesus Christ in all our journeys throughout our mortal lives. May we always recognize Him as our ultimate Guide and Exemplar. Let us always keep our eyes focused on Him and His teachings so that we might not lose sight of the path on which He leads us safely home.
