ACCRA, GHANA
The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Alhaji Alie Mahama, visited the Accra Ghana Temple Complex this fall. He was welcomed by the first counselor in the Area Presidency, Elder Craig A. Cardon of the Seventy.
During his meeting with the vice president, Elder Cardon gave him a book from the BYU Middle Eastern Texts Initiative in the Islamic Translation Series. Mr. Mahama is the first person in Ghana to receive one of these books.
Elder Cardon read the foreword of the book with Mr. Mahama: "Islamic civilization represents nearly fourteen centuries of intense intellectual activity and believers in Islam number roughly one billion. The books that will appear in the Islamic Translation Series — of which this book is one of seven volumes — are among the treasures of this great culture. But they are more than that. They are properly the inheritance of all the people of the world.
"As an Institution of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Brigham Young University is honored to assist in making these texts available to many for the first time. In doing so, we hope to serve our fellow beings, of all creeds and cultures."
The vice president, a Muslim, expressed his appreciation for the book. He also commented on the beauty of the temple complex and his pleasure of viewing it for the first time.
