President Gordon B. Hinckley, then first counselor in the First Presidency, wrote in the First Presidency message of the January 1989 Ensign magazine: "The Doctrine and Covenants is unique among our books of scripture.
"The variety of matters the book deals with is amazing. They include principles and procedures concerning the governance of the Church. . . . It is evident from reading the Doctrine and Covenants that Joseph Smith had an all-encompassing understanding of the eternal purposes of God."
