The call of President Thomas S. Monson to serve as a mission president was announced in the March 7, 1959, Church News.
The article stated: "Appointed this week to preside over the Canadian Mission was Thomas S. Monson, former member of the Temple View Stake presidency. Elder Monson is assistant manager and sales manager of the Deseret News Press."
The article continued: "He and Mrs. Monson with their two children, Thomas Lee, 7, and Ann Frances, 4, plan to leave for Toronto, Canada, shortly after General Conference."
Born Aug. 21, 1927, he was 31 years old when called to go to Canada. He was serving as secretary of the Senior Aaronic Priesthood Committee in the Valley View Third Ward, Valley View Stake. At age 22, he began service as bishop of the 6-7th Ward in the Temple View Stake.
Released from his term as mission president in early 1962, President Monson was sustained to the Quorum of the Twelve in October 1963 general conference.
"A graduate of the University of Utah School of Business in 1948, President Monson became associated with the Deseret News," the article stated.
